Making Winter Training Fun

ILM Winter Bike League Overview
The ILM Winter Bike League is a structured winter group ride running January through February, designed to keep riders motivated, fit, and connected through the offseason. The goal is to bring A and B riders together in one cohesive group, combining steady endurance riding with short, controlled race-pace efforts.
Rides take place on Saturdays at 9:00 AM, with weekly routes and start locations posted ahead of time on Wilmington Area Rides socials. Routes will range from 50–65 miles, focusing on consistent pacing, smart group riding, and safe, repeatable efforts.
Ride information, routes, and start locations will be posted on the ride calendar and shared on the Wilmington Area Rides Facebook page.

Ride Format & Pace
The ride will roll at a steady 18–20 mph, with the goal of keeping the group together for the majority of the ride. Stronger riders are encouraged to contribute by taking longer or more frequent pulls, helping maintain smooth and predictable pacing.
Each route will include at least one predetermined race-pace zone. These zones are optional intensity segments where riders may attack or ride at a harder effort. Riders who choose not to participate can continue at the base pace. All riders regroup at the end of each race-pace zone, keeping the ride inclusive and structured rather than chaotic or selective.
This format allows riders to treat the ride like an interval workout — but in a controlled group environment.

-
Opportunities to push the pace during race-pace zones
-
A chance to take pulls, mentor newer riders, and still get quality efforts
It’s a way to stay sharp through winter while keeping the ride fun and community-focused.
Safety, Responsibility & Expectations
Participation in the ILM Winter Bike League is voluntary, and riders take part at their own risk. Cycling and group rides involve inherent risks, and each rider is responsible for their own safety and well-being at all times.
By attending, riders acknowledge and accept these risks and agree that Wilmington Area Rides and anyone assisting with organizing or hosting these rides assume no responsibility or liability for injuries, accidents, or damages.
Safety is always the priority — especially in race-pace zones. Riders are expected to ride predictably, communicate clearly, and prioritize smart decision-making over competition.
